Second Orderly J. J. Vassar was also a brave and good soldier and fought through all the battles. He was sick with measles and staid in the hospital about six weeks at Lynchburg, Va., and after his recovery he returned to the command and staid with the boys and participated in all their trials. On the ..th day of May, '64, while charging the enemy near the old Wilderness Tavern, at .....nia Ford on Rapidan river, he was painfully wounded through the knee, from which he died two days later in the field hospital. I do not remember what became of his remains, whether they were sent home or buried in Virginia soil, as so many of our heroes are. He was an orphan, having lost his parents before he enlisted, and had only one brother, Lucius, to mourn his loss.
