EDENTON TAKEN
At 9 o’clock
Wednesday morning 5 Gunboats came slowly up to the wharf at Edenton. The citizens who had decided to remain raised
a white flag, and the men from the boats landed and took possession. Soon after 15 other boats came and landed, in
all from 3 to 5000 soldiers, and sent out pickets from two to three miles
around. There were no Confederate troops
at Edenton. Soon after two Gunboats left
and went up the Chowan river, others went down the Sound and some over towards
Edenton is the
county site of Chowan county and has about 1500 inhabitants. It is about 30 miles from
