EDENTON TAKEN

At 9 o’clock Wednesday morning 5 Gunboats came slowly up to the wharf at Edenton.  The citizens who had decided to remain raised a white flag, and the men from the boats landed and took possession.  Soon after 15 other boats came and landed, in all from 3 to 5000 soldiers, and sent out pickets from two to three miles around.  There were no Confederate troops at Edenton.  Soon after two Gunboats left and went up the Chowan river, others went down the Sound and some over towards Plymouth.  This information we have received from Mr. Haughton, who left town after, or about the time the Federals landed.

Edenton is the county site of Chowan county and has about 1500 inhabitants.  It is about 30 miles from Elizabeth City.  Mr. Haughton says there are several men in Edenton strongly suspected of holding Union sentiments.
