A
number of Company B, 27th Regt. N. C. Infantry,
having departed this life since leaving Rapidan
Station, on our march to join the Army of the Potomac. The undersigned, at a meeting of the “Grays”
were appointed a committee to prepare suitable resolutions in memory of the
deceased.
WHEREAS,
In the providence of Almighty god, death has taken
from our midst some of our best loved and most useful members. Therefore be it,
Resolved,
That in the deaths of R. D. Brown, who died at Richmond, Sept.__ 1861; Hugh Hall, Richmond, Sept. 19th.;
R. S. Coble, Frederick, Md., Sept. 12th; A. F. Coble, Jas. M.
Edwards, R. L. Smith, Samuel Young, killed at Sharpsburg, Sept. 17th;
W. W. Cuderwood and R. L. Donnell, both of whom were
wounded at Sharpsburg, the former having died on enemy’s Hospital, Sept. 29th,
and the latter, at the house of a friend in the North, Nov. 30th;
and W. H. McLean, at Winchester, Oct. 24th. Our company has sustained a loss not to be
repaired, and our country and State, some of its best citizens.
Resolved,
That while we bow with submission to Him who doeth all
things well, we cannot but lament the loss of our gallant comrades, falling
victims to this cruel war, in the very spring time of their existence. That we cheerfully record the pure patriotism
which induced them among the first to sacrifice the pleasure and comforts of
home and friends, for the privations, hardships and dangers of a soldier’s
life, to assist in hurling back from the sacred soil of our sunny South, the
hateful hirelings of a wicked despot, and that we remember with pleasure the
many moral and social virtues, which endeared them to us, and all who knew
them.
Resolved,
That we offer our heartfelt sympathies to their
relations and friends, for the losses they have sustained, and pray that they
may derive consolation from Him who alone can heal the sorrows of earth.
