An abolition fleet of ninety-two sail is reported to be
off Beaufort, N. C., and fifty thousand abolition troops encamped at Morehead
and Carolina Cities.
A company of cavalry, Capt. Parkers, surprised a party of Abolitionists
last Friday, at Big Northeast Bridge,
near Jacksonville,
killing a Captain and five privates, and routing the balance. No loss on our side.
Burnside has issued an address dated January 20th,
announcing to his army that they are to meet the enemy again.—He says the
auspicious moment seems to have arrived to strike a great and moral blow to the
rebellion and gain the victory which is due the country. The Washington Star, of the afternoon of the
23rd, says Gen. Hooker’s division has certainly crossed the
Rappahannock, and the event caused much excitement in Washington.—Another
severe battle is doubtless imminent on the Rappahannock. Our forces are said to be in readiness.
The gallant Capt. Semmes, of the Alabama,
attacked the U. S. gunboat
Hatteras off the coast of Texas
and sunk her, with all her crew except one officer and five men.
