The
Sixth North Carolina Regiment went into the battle of Manassas without having eaten anything from
Saturday morning, and the gallant fellows were without food until the battle
was over, at nightfall, when President Davis ordered provisions to them, and
they supped and bivouacked on the field, being unable from exhaustion, to go
into camp. They were part of the brigade
which the lamented Kirby Smith brought from Winchester on the cars, and which, through
the decision and rapidity of movement, appeared in the battle at a critical
moment and did so much to turn the scale.
