The 22nd N. C. Regiment.
This
Regiment is in Gen. Pender’s Brigade, and Maj. General Hill’s Division. It has therefore fallen to the lot of the 22nd
Regiment to participate in the first and each succeeding blow, which have
driven McClellan and his “On to Richmond” army in such hot haste away from the idol of his heart. We do not pretend to know what the official
report may say of the 22nd, but it can be positively asserted that
better fighting has not been done by any command. Reduced by sickness, to only the rise of 300
men, it has never failed to drive back the enemy in every engagement with a
heavy loss, as every visit over each successive field clearly revealed. The men were perfectly cool, and even while
charging batteries, fired with deliberate aim.
Well may the sister counties of Guilford
and Randolph be
proud of the brave sons by whom they are represented; for we are advised by the
Richmond Whig, that the 22nd drove back the enemy and followed up every
charge further than any other command, except in one instance when it was
accompanied by the 26th, under lieut. Col.
McElroy.
The
22nd was commanded by James Conner, Colonel; Robert H. Gray, lieut.
Colonel; and C. C. Cole, Major, with but thirteen company officers. They crossed the Chickahominy on Thursday
afternoon, at the Virginia
Central Railroad
Bridge, and engaged the
enemy immediately, driving them down the river to Mechanicsville, where a
general and stubborn engagement ensued.
Besides very great natural advantages, the enemy was strongly
artificially fortified, and the fight was a desperate one. The following is a list of the casualties:

The Regiment now numbers for duty 190 enlisted men, 1 Captain, and 3
Lieutenants.
