Three prisoners captured by our forces in the Bethel Engagement say that Gen. Butler, of Massachusetts, personally commanded the forces attacking the Confederate position at Bethel Church and that the number of four thousand five hundred to five thousand of the enemy were engaged in the fight.
They stated further that over one hundred and fifty of the enemy were killed. Only a small part of their force were engaged in the fight.
Among
the killed of note, was Col. David M. Wardrope, of
the
I have seen his sword myself which has his name engraved upon it. It has been brought to this city and is now here in possession of the Government.
Only six hundred (600) of our forces were engaged in the battle.
