Among the
prisoners taken by the Yankees at Newbern we learned the name of Robert
Meltier, a young man of Nansemond county.
He was a member of Capt. Mayo’s company.
Capt. Wm. T.
Parker, formerly of Nansemond commanded a company from Gates in Col. Avery’s
Regiment. He fought bravely, losing 6 of
his men.
Lieut. Alex.
Jones, formerly of Suffolk,
fought through the battle in Capt. Whiteburst’s Heavy Artillery company. This company came out of the fight with only
6 men left, the balance being all wounded, captured or killed.
