EXECUTION—On Saturday last a solemn tragedy was enacted at Camp Lee Central
Fair Grounds, near Richmond. Patrick
McGowan of company I, 14th Virginia Regiment, and John Kellerher, company F same regiment, were shot for
desertion. After the shooting, Owen
Maguire, Company H, 1st Virginia Regiment was tied to a tree, by his
hands and feet, and received 50 lashes on his bare back, well laid on by a
stout Dragoon, who used a stout leather strap.
His offence was desertion.
