ALEXANDRIA, July 4—In Tuesday’s engagement about eighty of Patterson’s command were killed.

The action was with Col. Jackson’s force at Falling Waters.

On our side six were killed and 20 wounded.

Patterson retreated across the river before Gen. Johnston could reach him.

RICHMOND, July 5, P.M. –Passengers just arrived from Winchester contradict the report telegraphed you that Patterson had retreated before Johnston and recrossed the Potomac. They aver, on the contrary, that Gen. Johnston repulsed the enemy three times yesterday near Martinsburg, with heavy loss to their side. He had them surrounded last night at Martinsburg.

Patterson’s forces are variously estimated at from eighteen thousand to twenty-five thousand men.
