M. Garber, of the Chickasaw Guards, writes to his
paper, the Houston
Patrol from Harper’s Ferry, on the
8th, at which time there were nineteen thousand men at that
post. He mentions the large numbers of
wagons being brought there, and supposed they were designed for a march into
Maryland and Pennsylvania. As our
readers are now aware they were for use in Johnston’s evacuation.
As all the
machinery has been moved from here to Fayetteville, N. C. there is nothing to
guard, and for its importance as an advance post, might be burned and
evacuated.
