MR. HEARTT:--I was
requested by the Surgeon and Officers of the 6th North Carolina
State Troops to tender to the ladies of Hillsborough, through the Recorder,
their most sincere thanks for their valuable donation of Hospital Stores, sent
them by me. Never was anything of the
kind more acceptable at the time they arrived, and I can truly say I never felt
more proud of old Orange and her noble daughters, (God bless them,) than when I
saw the many articles of clothing and other comforts prepared and forwarded by
them for our sick soldiers; the remembrance of which will ever be fresh and
green in their minds, and will be treasured up in their hearts as long as life
lasts.
I shall leave again
for the Army about the 25th of this month. All articles marked to my care, will be taken
charge of at Hillsborough or Durhams. The boxes should be well made, hooped and
nailed at the ends. I would advise that
nothing in the way of cooked meats should be sent. Loaf bread, pound or sponge cake, potatoes,
onions, beets, dry beef, ham, pickles, preserves, wines, cordials, etc.,
clothing of all kinds in great demand.
There are many who can do much at this point. Cotton comforts are light, and will answer
for bed and blanket. I will see that
everything is carried through safe.
