The
following from the Petersburg Express is the latest from Nashville:
“We learn from an
entirely reliable source, that there are about 8,000 of the enemy in Nashville,
who are quartered in the Capitol and all the public buildings of the city, over
all of which the stars and stripes are waving.
They are rapidly erecting fortifications—guns, batteries, etc., at every
point of approach on this side of the city.
The city appears almost literally deserted. Ladies are never seen upon the streets, and
the inhabitants keep themselves close.
