SUBJUGATION
The enemy are not so much gratified by the result as the
promise. As testified by the reception
in Tennessee,
they can only subjugate us by holding, occupying and possessing every foot of
ground. The ____ fancied, are found to
be creatures of the imagination. Since Nashville was taken, one
dashing trooper—Jack Morgan—with a company of Cavalry, has captured or killed
between four and five hundred invader’s pickets. A tremor pervades the whole host. They never feel safe twenty yards from the
main army. This fact is fatal to the
hope of subjugation. It will take an
army of Yankees on every square mile of the Southern Confederacy to ensure
submission; and even that would not suffice.
