ILLINOIS
VOLUNTEERS IN THE SOUTHERN ARMY—
The following from the Memphis
Appeal indicates the current of feeling among the masses in Illinois:
We
have authentic information that a company of southern Illinoisans have reported
themselves at Union city for duty in the southern army. They ran the gauntlet of the Lincoln pickets
and spies, and reached our lines in a nearly destitute condition after
encountering many hardships and “hair breadth escapes.” These noble and gallant spirits were
cordially welcomed to the hospitality of our camp, and their wants were
liberally supplied, the ladies especially contributing to their comfort. They are actively drilling for service, and
are enlisted “for the war.” They report
in many counties in southern Illinois, if the popular sentiment were permitted
to have utterances, three fourths of the people would vote to go with the south
where all their sympathies are.
