MAGRUDER’S MEN—It is said that Col. Magruder had with
him at the Bethel
Church his old force of
regulars who were under him in the United States Army; they had deserted in
order to join their old leader. This may
account, in part, for the terrible effect with which the guns were managed in
the fight.
This paragraph was started in the North soon after the
action at Bethel. Now Lincoln
says none of the soldiers have deserted.
Very well; they may have it what way they please.
