MAGRUDER’S MEN—It is said that Col. Magruder had with him at the Bethel Church his old force of regulars who were under him in the United States Army; they had deserted in order to join their old leader.  This may account, in part, for the terrible effect with which the guns were managed in the fight.

This paragraph was started in the North soon after the action at Bethel.  Now Lincoln says none of the soldiers have deserted.  Very well; they may have it what way they please.
