NANSEMOND SOLDIERS

Now, that there is a prospect of having a general round with the enemy we do well to have our eyes upon our soldiers in the army.

The Suffolk Continentals, commanded by Capt. Britt and the Marion Rangers under command of Capt. Whitehead, are in Col. Parish’s 16th Va. Regiment at Huger Barracks near Norfolk.

The Nansemond Rangers, Capt. Arthur’s company, are in Pryor’s Regiment near Smithfield.

The Cypress Sharp Shooters and South Quay Guards, are in Col. Chambliss’ 41st Va. Regiment near Sewel’s Point.  These companies are commanded, the former by Capt. Brinkley and the latter by Capt. Lawrence.

Capt. Williams’ company, the Nansemond Guard are at the Entrenched Camp, in Col. Corprew’s Regiment.

The Chuchatuck Light Artillery, under Command of Capt. Phillips have charge of a Battery at Cedar Point.

Capt. Brewer’s Cavalry company have their Head Quarters somewhere between Suffolk and Edenton.

Capt. Hanshaw’s new Cavalry company will be mustered into service this week.

Nearly all the old companies mentioned above, have received a large number of recruits, recently, and nearly all the old members are re-enlisting for the war.

Beside the Volunteer companies mentioned above, Capt. Kilby’s Company of Norfolk county, is made up largely of Nansemond men.  They are stationed at Grimes’ Battery near Portsmouth.

The Militia of the county, making three companies, commanded by Captains Hunter, Arnold and Ballard, are under command of Col. Copeland.  They were mustered into service last week, and are stationed at the Court House in Suffolk.

There is perhaps, not a more loyal county in the State, than old Nansemond.  Her citizens seem willing to do their whole duty in this struggle.
