We have received a great many verbal accounts of the fight on the 11^th at camp Garnett. They are variant and in some respects contradictory. But they all agree in one particular: that our men who were engaged fought like heroes. For four hours less than 300 men withstood 3,000, and each killed his man; for one of the best accredited reports we have represents the killed of the enemy at not less than 400.

On our side the killed and wounded and prisoners are not supposed to exceed 150. This, though disastrous in the loss of so many noble and brave men, is one of the most gallant as it was one of the bloodiest fights on record. Blood shed in such profusion will make good the cause for which it flowed.
